Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have arrested a Rohingya couple in possession of a stash of yaba tablets with the help of a dog squad in Cox’s Bazar’s Teknaf.
Although registered with a Rohingya camp in Teknaf, the couple lived in a rented house outside the camp and ran a drug business, claims the BGB.
They were arrested from a rented house owned by an individual named Nezam in the Islamabad area of ward No. 4 of Teknaf Municipality on Sunday, said Lieutenant Colonel Ashikur Rahman, commander of BGB's Teknaf 2nd Battalion.
The arrestees are Mabud Kamal's son Mohammad Ayub, 37, and his wife Rabeya, 35. They are registered residents of A-Block of Jadimura refugee camp No. 27 in Teknaf.
Lt Col Ashikur said that the BGB conducted a raid in the Islamabad area after getting the information of a drug shipment coming in from Myanmar. A house was then searched with the support of the BGB’s dog squad.
The dog squad found a carefully hidden shipment of 9,400 yaba tablets.
Although the arrestees lived in a rented house in the Teknaf municipal area, they went to the Rohingya camp every month to collect their rations. While Ayub is known as a construction worker, both he and his wife used to supply drugs to locals and other drug peddlers.
A case has been filed against the couple with the Teknaf Police Station, the BGB officer said.
