A Dhaka court has granted police a further four days to interrogate Chan Mia and Mohidul Islam -- the driver and caretaker, respectively, of Tarique Ahmed Siddique, the military adviser to former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
Metropolitan Magistrate Al Biruni Meer passed the order on Friday after the investigators produced the duo in court following their initial four-day stint in police custody.
The suspects were arrested on Apr 19 -- Mohidul in Thakurgaon and Chan Mia in Dhaka’s Vashantek. They were first remanded on Apr 20.
Inspector Md Amjad Hossain Talukder of the DMP’s Detective Branch (DB), who is investigating the case, sought a fresh seven-day remand.
Prosecution Police Sub-Inspector Mazharul Islam told the media that the state argued in favour of the remand while the defence lawyers moved for bail.
After hearing both sides, the magistrate allowed a four-day extension of the questioning.
Chan Mia and Mohidul were shown arrested in a case involving the death of Abdul Wadud, a businessman, during the anti-government protests in July 2024.
According to the case files, Wadud was shot dead on the afternoon of Jul 19 in Nilkhet. His brother-in-law, Abdur Rob, filed the murder case naming 130 individuals, including Hasina.
