The government has removed Tajul Islam from his post as chief prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) and appointed Md Aminul Islam in his place.
The law ministry announced the move in a notice on Monday.
According to the gazette, Aminul has been appointed chief prosecutor of the tribunal under Section 7 of the International Crimes (Tribunals) Act, 1973 to conduct cases until further orders.
He will enjoy the same status, salary, allowances and other benefits as the attorney general, the notice said.
The same order revoked the previous appointment of Tajul, which had been issued on Sept 5, 2024. The move takes immediate effect.
A native of Habiganj, Aminul was enrolled as an advocate of the High Court on May 27, 1993, and later as an advocate of the Appellate Division on Dec 30, 2021.
Tajul had previously represented Jamaat-e-Islami leaders tried for war crimes at the tribunal during the tenure of the Awami League government. He also served as joint convenor of the Amar Bangladesh (AB) Party.
After the student-led mass uprising that toppled the Awami League government on Aug 5, 2024, the interim administration headed by Muhammad Yunus reconstituted the tribunal. As part of that process, Tajul was appointed chief prosecutor on Sept 8, 2024.
At the same time, the law ministry appointed four other Supreme Court lawyers as prosecutors of the tribunal.
The tribunal, originally formed during the Awami League’s tenure to try crimes against humanity committed in 1971, is now conducting proceedings against former ministers and MPs of that government.
In one case, former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal have been sentenced to death for their roles in the violent suppression of student-led protests.
