The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has taken five suspects into custody for questioning following the discovery of customs official Bullet Bairagi’s body beside the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway in Cumilla.
The suspects, described by investigators as "professional muggers", were detained in Cumilla and surrounding areas on Sunday, confirmed Lt Col HM Sajjad Hossain, commanding officer of RAB-11.
"We are currently interrogating five suspects in our custody. Our operation is ongoing, and further details will be provided later," he said.
Meanwhile, the victim’s mother Nillima Bairagi has filed a murder case against unidentified persons at Cumilla Sadar Dakshin Police Station on Saturday night.
Bullet, 35, an assistant revenue officer at the Bibirbazar Land Port, went missing on Friday night while returning from a training session in Chattogram.
His bloodied body was recovered on Saturday morning from a pavement near the Iris Hill Hotel in the Kotbari area.
Cumilla Sadar Dakshin Police chief Sirajul Mostafa said police have begun their investigation.
"A preliminary report found severe crushing injuries to the back of his head. The exact cause of death will be confirmed after the postmortem report," he added.
According to his family, Bullet boarded a Dhaka-bound bus at Chattogram’s Alankar Mor around 11pm on Friday.
He was supposed to get off at the Cumilla bypass.
At 2:25am, he called home to say he had reached the Tomsom Bridge intersection.
However, his mother noted something unsettling.
"His voice sounded unfamiliar during that final call," she said.
When he failed to arrive home and his phone was found switched off, the family filed a police complaint on Saturday morning, shortly before his body was discovered.
Police noted that while there were no major injuries on his body, his face was bloodied, and his mobile phone and bag were missing.
Bullet, a resident of Tungipara in Gopalganj, joined the Dhaka customs office through the 41st BCS (non-cadre).
He lived in Cumilla’s Rajganj area with his parents, wife, and 1-year-old son.
