The prosecution has petitioned the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) to frame charges against ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan, and former police chief Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun in a case related to crimes against humanity during the July Uprising.
On Tuesday, ICT Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam made the request, prompting defence lawyers to ask the court for more time to prepare their case.
Later, the three-member tribunal headed by Justice Golam Mortuza Mozumder scheduled the next hearing for Jul 7. The court proceedings were broadcast live by the media.
State-appointed lawyer Amir Hossain represented Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan, while Zayed Bin Amjad represented Mamun.
Tajul presented the request for the framing of five charges and sought their indictment in the case.
Afterwards, defence lawyer Amir informed the court that he was not prepared and requested 15 more days. The court granted one week’s time and scheduled the hearing for Jul 7.
Former inspector general of police Mamun is currently in jail. He was brought to the tribunal for the hearing.
His lawyer Zayed informed the tribunal that he would not attend the formal charge framing hearing and would participate in the next scheduled hearing.
Investigators have described Hasina as the “mastermind, conductor, and superior commander” of the atrocities aimed at quelling the July-August Movement against her government.
On Dec 17, 2024, the tribunal ordered the completion of investigations into two cases involving Hasina, former minister Obaidul Quader, and 46 others within two months.
Later, on Feb 18, the tribunal called for the investigations against Hasina to be completed by Apr 20.
The tribunal's probe report on the case was submitted on May 12, bringing five charges of crimes against humanity against the accused.
Later, on Jun 1, the tribunal accepted five charges against Hasina and two others.
On that day, fresh arrest warrants were issued for Hasina and Asaduzzaman in connection with the case.
During the court session that day, Chief Prosecutor Tajul, along with prosecutors Abdus Sobhan Tarafdar and Mizanul Islam, read out the charges against the three accused.
