The Election Commission (EC) has begun hearing objections and suggestions over draft proposals to redraw the boundaries of Dhaka's constituencies ahead of the 13th parliamentary elections.
The session started on Tuesday morning at the EC headquarters, with Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin, four commissioners and the EC secretary in attendance.
Petitioners and their lawyers are presenting their arguments from designated spots.
More than 300 petitions have been filed regarding the proposed boundaries of Dhaka’s 28 constituencies. While multiple applications have been submitted both for and against the changes, only one representative from each side is being allowed to speak per constituency.
On Tuesday, hearings were scheduled for constituencies in Manikganj, Munshiganj, Gazipur, Narsingdi, Narayanganj, and Dhaka.
The EC published its draft boundary plan on Jul 30, proposing to cut Bagerhat’s constituencies from four to three and increase Gazipur’s from five to six in order to balance voter numbers.
