Making this announcement after an ECNEC meeting at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar on Tuesday, Kamal said the suggestion to rename Comilla Division came from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

"Prime Minister told me the Comilla Division should be renamed Mainamati. In future, no administrative division will be named after a district," he said.

Kamal is Awami League MP from Comilla-10 constituency.

There are eight divisions in the country at present - Dhaka, Chittagong, Khulna, Rajshahi, Sylhet, Rangpur, Barisal and Mymensingh.

On Sep 14, 2015, National Implementation Committee for Administrative Reorganisation-Reform (NICAR) approved the proposal for 'Mymensingh Division' with four districts scooped out of Dhaka Division.

Government had further plans to design 'Faridpur Division' by breaking up the Dhaka division and create another division with Comilla and Noakhali, said erstwhile Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan.

The same year, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina told the Parliament that it would be a problem to position Feni if Comilla Division came into being by splitting the Chittagong division.

Once approved by NICAR, the districts and land area of the proposed Mainamati division will be finalised.
