The 13th parliament has sat for the second day of its first session in what is set to be its last sitting before the Eid recess.
The House convened at 11am on Sunday under Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, with Leader of the House Tarique Rahman and ruling party MPs in attendance.
Lawmakers from the Jamaat-led opposition bloc, including Opposition Leader Shafiqur Rahman, were also present. They had walked out during President Md Shahabuddin’s opening address on Thursday, calling him an “ally of fascists”.
At Sunday’s sitting, Cox’s Bazar MP Almgir Muhammad Mahmudullah Farid raised the first question on behalf of BNP lawmaker Sultan Mahmud Babu of Jamalpur.
When Shafiqur sought to speak on the July Charter, the speaker told him he would be allowed to do so after the one-hour question session.
“Not at this moment. You will be given time to raise it after the question-answer session,” the speaker said.
The opposition leader then resumed his seat.
Sunday’s agenda includes question-and-answer proceedings, disposal of notices on matters of public importance, a motion of thanks on the president’s address and discussion on that motion.
The Business Advisory Committee has decided to continue the first session until Apr 30 and to allocate 50 hours for discussion on the president’s speech.
After the committee’s first meeting on Saturday, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said parliament would sit on Mar 15 before going into recess from Mar 16.
“It will sit again on Mar 29 and continue until Apr 30,” he said.
He also said a special committee had been formed to deal with 133 ordinances and that parliament would discuss the Constitution Reform Council.
According to a parliament secretariat statement, the House will sit at 3pm on working days except public holidays, although the speaker has been authorised to change the schedule if necessary.
