Detective Branch (DB) police have petitioned for a seven-day remand to question retired lt gen Sheikh Mamun Khaled, former director general of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), in a murder case related to the July Uprising.
The case's investigating officer, Sub-Inspector (SI) Kafil Uddin of the DB police, applied for the remand on Thursday.
A hearing in this regard is scheduled to be held in the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Siddique Azad, said state lawyer Muhammad Shamsuddoha Sumon.
The remand application states that on Jul 19, 2024, around 3:30pm, 500-700 Awami League leaders and activists attacked a peaceful protest consisting of students and members of the public with makeshift weapons in the Falpatti area of Mirpur-10. At that time, on the orders of Mamun, the protesters were fired upon indiscriminately, it claims.
Delwar Hossain was seriously injured after being shot. He died at a private hospital in Shyamoli on Jul 21 while undergoing treatment.
The petition said the primary investigation had found “sufficient evidence” regarding the involvement of suspect Mamun in the case. It is imperative to interrogate the accused closely to unravel the main mystery of the murder, arrest other accused in the case, collect the correct names and addresses of unknown suspects and recover the weapons used, it said.
Earlier, DB police arrested Sheikh Mamun Khaled from his flat in the capital's Mirpur DOHS area around 12:30am on Wednesday.
The DB also arrested retired lt gen Masud Uddin Chowdhury, a controversial former army officer who played a prominent role under the caretaker government of 2007-08, from his house in the Baridhara DOHS area late on Monday.
Mamun, another influential former army officer at the time, was arrested a day after Masud was remanded for five days in a human trafficking case on Tuesday.
There has also been discussion about the role of former army officer Mamun during the caretaker government period, including allegations of the involvement of the DGFI in political activities.
Mamun joined the DGFI as a director in December, 2007 as an officer of the Signals Corps. Later, in June 2008, he replaced brig Chowdhury Fazlul Bari and served as director (Counter Intelligence Bureau-CIB).
Later, during the Awami League government, Mamun returned to DGFI as Director General (DG) in 2011, succeeding lt gen Molla Fazle Akbar.
After serving in this position for about a year and a half, he was replaced by maj gen Akbar Hossain.
Mamun was the vice chancellor of the Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) during his service in the army. He later served as a three-star general at the National Defence College (NDC) before retiring.
He was serving as a colonel in Cumilla when the military-backed caretaker government took office on Jan 11, 2007.
After the Awami League government fell in the 2024 July Uprising, the court banned Mamun and his wife from leaving the country in May 2025, following an application by the Anti-Corruption Commission.
At the time, the ACC had announced an investigation into financial irregularities and assets against him.
