The United States has expressed “full support” for Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus’s roadmap to rebuild state institutions and facilitate a democratic transition through free and fair elections, Acting US Ambassador to Bangladesh Tracey Ann Jacobson has said.
She paid tribute to those who lost their lives during the July Uprising at a US Independence Day event in Dhaka on Wednesday.
“We are on the eve of the anniversary of the student-led uprising last year, which through courage, commitment, and sacrifice, laid the foundation for the historic work that we are witnessing now to rebuild the state and to restore democracy,” the envoy said.
“We honour the sacrifices of those who gave their lives last year,” she added. “We fully support the work planned by the chief advisor, to build consensus around reform and to pave the way for free and fair elections early next year.”

Jacobson noted that the US support was reaffirmed during a recent phone call between the US secretary of state and Yunus.
She also spoke about US business activity spanning a range of sectors in Bangladesh.
The event was attended by politicians, diplomats, businessmen, civil society members, cultural activists, and rights advocates.
Finance Advisor Salehuddin Ahmed, the chief guest, highlighted several aspects of Bangladesh-US relations.
He said he would travel to Washington on Wednesday for talks with the US International Trade Administration to negotiate the withdrawal of tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump.
The interim government hopes for a “positive outcome”.
The ceremony began with the national anthems of Bangladesh and the United States.
Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed was also present at the event.
