Police have submitted a charge sheet against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 40 others in an “attempted murder” case over the shooting of a Chhatra Dal activist in Mohammadpur, Dhaka, during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in 2024.
However, the investigating officer of Mohammadpur Police Station, Sub-Inspector Ferdous Zaman, recommended dropping 127 suspects from the case as they were found to have “no involvement” in the incident.
The case was filed by Chhatra Dal activist Sheikh Mohammad Ashik, who was injured in a shooting near Mohammadpur Bus Stand on Jul 19, 2024.
He had named 129 people, including Sheikh Hasina, as suspects, along with another 100–150 unidentified individuals.
After completing the investigation, SI Zaman submitted the charge sheet to the court on Apr 20.
He said, “The 127 people recommended for acquittal were not present in the Mohammadpur area at the time of the incident.”
Others named in the charge sheet include Obaidul Quader, former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former minister Jahangir Kabir Nanak, former MP Sadeque Khan, former councillors Asif Ahmed and Tarekuzzaman Rajib, and student leader Naimul Hasan Russell.
Those recommended for acquittal include Kamrul Hossain, Wahid Hasan, Akkas Saudagar, Morshedul Alam Chowdhury Tazu, Mohammad Nizam Uddin, Abbas Uddin, Tofail Ahmed, Nikhil Chandra Shil, and Tota Molla.
The investigating officer said in the charge sheet, “Following the conspiracy and prior instructions of Sheikh Hasina, Obaidul Quader, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, and Jahangir Kabir Nanak, the other accused named in the charge sheet acted in a criminal conspiracy with one another across Bangladesh in an effort to violently suppress the justified movement led by the students and the public.”
According to the case document, protesters were demonstrating near Mayur Villa at Mohammadpur Bus Stand on Jul 19, 2024. Around 2:45pm, protesters were beaten with sticks and fired upon. Ashik was seriously injured after being shot and fell on the road. Believing him to be dead, the attackers left him there.
Ashik filed the case at Mohammadpur Police Station on Sept 28. Attempts to contact him for a reaction regarding the charge sheet were unsuccessful, as his phone was switched off.
Jewel Hasan Raj, former general secretary of Dhaka Metropolitan West Chhatra Dal, also took part in the protest that day and has been listed as a witness in the charge sheet.
When contacted, Raj said: “That day was Friday. Activists from the Mohammadpur and Adabor units of Chhatra Dal joined the protestin the Mohammadpur Bus Stand area. I was there too. I was shot in my right hand and had to receive hospital treatment.”
He added: “The police opened fire to suppress the movement. One person was shot. When I went there, I saw what looked like a dead body lying there. Bullets were being brought in ambulances. We saw police firing, then stopping for two hours, and starting again when ambulances arrived. It is impossible to fully describe what that period was like.”
Raj said: “The bullet hit my hand. If it had hit my head or chest, I could have died too. I want justice in the case against the accused.”
