Bangladesh and China have signed 13 cooperation agreements, broadening ties in areas ranging from investment and trade to education and media collaboration during Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's visit to Beijing.
The agreements were signed at the Great Hall of the People following talks led by Tarique and his Chinese counterpart Li Qiang on Thursday.
Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman, Information Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon, the director general of the Multilateral Economic Affairs wing and a senior foreign ministry official signed the agreements on behalf of Bangladesh.
Speaking at a press conference, Prime Minister's Office (PMO) spokesperson Mahdi Amin said the MoUs included cooperation on investment and green development, as well as a joint action plan.
“Discussions were held on increasing Bangladesh's export capacity so that we can expand exports to China, along with different areas of development cooperation,” he said.
“Talks were also held on concessional loans from China, including ways to reduce interest rates and extend grace periods.”

Mahdi said an MoU was signed under China's Global Development Initiative, covering cooperation in health, education and manpower capacity development.
“A separate cooperation plan on human resource development has also been signed. An MoU has been concluded on exporting Bangladesh's national fruit, jackfruit, to China,” he added.
He said Bangladesh would also introduce Mandarin language education.
“Two separate MoUs have been signed covering the inclusion of Mandarin in our school curriculum and cooperation in technical and vocational education.”
Mahdi added, “Four MoUs have been signed on expanding collaboration in the media sector, advancing think-tank cooperation and strengthening ties between state-owned television channels and newspapers in the two countries.”
On investment cooperation, he said separate agreements had been signed to boost Chinese investment in Anwara in Chattogram and in Mongla through economic zones.
The aim, he said, was to establish new Chinese factories and production facilities in Bangladesh and create employment opportunities.
Earlier in the day, the Communist Party of China and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) signed a separate memorandum of understanding at Beijing's Diaoyutai State Guesthouse.
The agreement was signed by BNP Joint Secretary General Humaiun Kobir, who oversees international relations, and Liu Haixing, minister of the International Department of the Communist Party of China, with BNP chief Tarique in attendance.

The memorandum seeks to expand communication and cooperation between the two parties.
Liu expressed hope that it would open new avenues for future collaboration in media, think tanks, people-to-people exchanges and improving living standards.
