Home Advisor Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has said weapons looted from police stations during the Anti-discrimination Student Movement may have been thrown into canals and wetlands, making recovery difficult.
He spoke to reporters at the Bangladesh Police Academy in Rajshahi on Sunday.
“Some looted weapons have yet to be recovered. Probably those were dumped into canal-beel-river,” said Jahangir.
“But I assure you those looted police firearms will not be used during the election,” he said.
He claimed that everyday weapons are recovered.
He made the comments after the passing-out parade of trainee assistant police superintendents of the 41st BCS police batch in Sardah, Rajshahi.
The home advisor claimed militancy is less prevalent in the country than in the past.
He, however, said there is the presence of what he described as some “fascist militants”, who are hiding in other countries.
Jahangir pledged to bring the militants back home.
He urged the new police officers to act professionally in the parliamentary polls and deal with indiscipline with iron fist.
