Patients at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital are facing severe difficulties as intern doctors continue a work stoppage following an attack on a female intern doctor.

Intern doctors at the hospital have been on strike for 24 consecutive hours after failing to reach an agreement with the administration over the incident.

The doctors said on Sunday morning that they have entered a second round of talks with the hospital authorities.

Md Ramzan Mia from Habiganj admitted his newborn, born on Wednesday, to Ward No. 22 on the fifth floor of Osmani Hospital.

Describing the suffering caused by the strike, he said:

“We haven’t been able to find any doctor since the scuffle on Friday night. My son has been diagnosed with jaundice. A doctor prescribed tests, but for the past two days we haven’t found any doctor to check the test reports. We are poor people—what are we supposed to do?”

Juned Ahmed from Charkhai area of Beanibazar has been staying at the hospital with his wife for five days in the gynaecology department of Ward No. 15. He, too, has been affected by the work stoppage.

“My wife had a Caesarean section and gave birth to a son. Since yesterday, we haven’t been seeing any doctors. Treatment is continuing based on the earlier prescriptions. We’ll see what happens today,” he said.

On Friday night, an altercation broke out between intern doctors and patients and their relatives at Surgery Ward No. 4 on the hospital’s fourth floor. The dispute later escalated into a clash, leaving at least five people injured, including a female doctor. Police arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control.

After the work stoppage began, senior hospital officials, including the director, held a meeting with the protesting intern doctors on Saturday. Following nearly an hour of discussion, the intern doctors announced that they would continue their strike.
