BNP leader Khandaker Mahbubuddin Ahmed dies

An advisor to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and a senior lawyer of the Supreme Court, Khandaker Mahbubuddin Ahmed, died of old-age complications at a city hospital on Saturday evening. He was 89.

Mahbubuddin Ahmed, also a former member of the BNP Standing Committee and a former lawmaker, breathed his last around 7:40pm at United Hospital, Human Rights Affairs Secretary of BNP Barrister Nasiruddin Ahmed Asim told bdnews24.com.

Ahmed was undergoing treatment at the hospital for a week.

He left behind two daughters, a son and a host of relatives and well-wishers to mourn his death.

BNP chief Khaleda Zia has expressed her deepest condolence on Ahmed’s demise.

The first namaz-e-janaza (funeral prayer) of the BNP leader will be held on the Supreme Court premises at 10:30am on Sunday, the second janaza will be held at in front of BNP’s central office in the city’s Naya Paltan at 12pm, third janaza at the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque premises after the Johr prayers and the fourth janaza at South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangshad Bhaban (Parliament complex).

He will be buried at Azimpur Graveyard.

Ahmed was a Member of the BNP Standing Committee for a long time. He lost the post in 2008. Since then, he was not seen in party activities.

He was elected an MP from Dhaka’s Dhanmondi-Mohammadpur constituency in the eighth parliamentary elections held in 2001. He was then the Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs.

Besides, the senior lawyer was elected President of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) for two terms and Vice-President for single term.

BNP leader Asim said that BNP chief Khaleda Zia would visit Ahmed’s Uttara residence in the city on Saturday night while returning to Dhaka from Rajbari district.
