Dhaka, May 4 (BDNEWS) – The triennial election of Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA), the apex organisation of the physicians of the country, will be held Thursday.
Some 25,000 members of the organisation will cast their votes from 8:30 am to 5 pm to elect their representatives. The five-member commission has completed all preparations to conduct the election.
The election has created a huge enthusiasm among the physicians of the country. On the other hand, some doctors are in fear of transfer and harassment.
The voters will elect 129 representatives, including general secretary, president of the central committee, and representatives at the unit and district levels.
Besides, counsellors for the central committee will be elected in proportionate with the number of the voters from the district level.
Election Commission sources said, among 25 thousand 294 voters of BMA, almost 10 thousand members are from Dhaka city. The voters of Dhaka will cast their vote at the polling centre at BMA building at Topkhana road.
Polls will be conducted in all the 64 districts of the country simultaneously. A total of 227 candidates are vying for 129 posts.
The posts are: President (1), Vice President (7), Treasurer (1), Joint Secretary General (1), Organising Secretary (1), Science Affairs Secretary (1), Office Secretary (1), Publicity and Public Relation Secretary (1), Social Welfare Secretary (1), Culture and Entertainment Secretary (1), Library Secretary (1) and 111 posts of Central Executive Committee members.
Two panels -- one backed by the ruling party while other backed by the opposition - are competing in the polls.
The panel backed by Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB), an associate organisation of the ruling BNP, is contesting in the election under the leadership of current president Dr MA Hadi and general secretary Dr AZM Zahid Hossain.
On the other hand, former president Rashid-e-Mahbub and Dr Iqbal Arslan are leading other panel backed by 'Swadhinata Chikitsak Parishad' supported by the opposition Awami League.
Hadi-Zahid panel announced 28 point pledges while Rashid-Arslan panel declared 16-point pledges on the occasion. Both the panels are optimistic about their victory in the ensuing election.
