Police have remanded six people to police custody for questioning over the murder of Emon aka “Alex Emon”, the leader of “Alex Group” youth gang, in Dhaka's Mohammadpur.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Monirul Islam made the decision on Thursday after hearing the application by the case investigating officer.
Sub-Inspector (SI) Mizanur Rahman of the Prosecution Department said the remanded suspects are Sayeed Hossain Shimul alias Ayush, Tuhin Biswas, Rabbi Kazi, Sumon alias Pakhir Pola Sumon, Rana, and Rasel aka Picchi Russell.
On Sunday afternoon, a group of attackers hacked and injured Emon on the slope of an embankment along Buddhijibi Road.
He died while undergoing treatment at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital.
The next day, his mother Ferdousi filed a murder case at Mohammadpur Police Station over the incident.
Police have arrested six suspects in the case so far. On Tuesday, case investigating officer, SI Sadhan Kumar Mondal of Mohammadpur Police Station, presented the accused in court and applied for a seven-day remand.
That day, the court sent the accused to jail and fixed Thursday for the remand hearing.
The accused were presented before the court during the hearing.
The investigating officer of the case presented arguments in favour of the remand application.
Shafiqul Islam Shafiq and others representing the accused moved for the remand application to be scrapped and applied for bail.
After the hearing, the court ordered the accused to be remanded for four days.
According to the details of the case, on Apr 12, at around 1:30 pm, Emon was asked by his father-in-law to bring him fish he had kept at home.
Emon left the house to do so. He stopped to chat with friends and then, around 4:30pm, as he reached the embankment slope, he was ambushed by attackers motivated by a prior feud. He was seriously injured by the indiscriminate attack.
Emon lost consciousness from blood loss. The police rescued him after locals reported the incident and took him to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College, where the doctor-on-duty declared him dead.
