The new council, elected by lawyers across the country, yet again chose Majumder for the key post in its first meeting on Tuesday.
The chairman is always the attorney general by the dint of his official position.
Tuesday’s meeting at the Bar Council office was presided by Attorney General Mahbubey Alam.
After being elected, Baset Majumder told reporters, "I will work tirelessly for the welfare of the lawyers."
Majumder, born in Comilla, was president of the Supreme Court Bar Association from 2001-2002.
Earlier, he had been its general secretary across two terms, from 1986 to 1988.
He was the Bar Council vice chairman two terms earlier, before pro-BNP lawyers gained dominance in the body.
The pro-Awami League lawyers gained control of the council after the lapse of one term.
After the Awami League supporters won a majority in the 14-member council in its Aug 26 election, the names of Baset Majumder and Barrister M Amir-Ul Islam were doing the rounds for the vice chairman’s post.
The two senior counsels are directly associated with the ruling party, but lead two factions of lawyers owing allegiance to the party.
But the factions closed ranks during the recently held election, enabling the pro-Awami League lawyers to win 11 of the 14 seats.
The others from the same panel who won along with Majumder and Islam are Abdul Matin Khasru, ZI Khan Panna, SM Rezaul Karim, Kazi Md Najibullah Hiru, HR Zahid Anwar, Md Ibrahim Hossain Chowdhury, Parvez Alam Khan, Md Yahiya and Md Rezaul Karim.
Baset Majumder had got 15,109 votes, while Amir-ul Islam fetched 14,043.
Those elected from the 15-member BNP-backed panel as members are former vice chairman Khandker Mahbub Hossain, Supreme Court Bar Association Secretary AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon and Kaimul Haque.
