Inqilab Moncho Convenor Osman Sharif Hadi, who was shot in the capital last week, has been airlifted from Dhaka to Singapore for advanced medical treatment.
The private jet, a Gulfstream G-100 being used as an air ambulance, departed Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 1:55pm on Monday, according to SM Ragib Samad, the airport's executive director.
It had previously landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 11:22am.
The Chief Advisor's Office on Sunday said that all necessary arrangements had been made to take Hadi, a prospective independent candidate in the upcoming parliamentary election, to Singapore General Hospital.
It added that the government had been in contact with hospitals in Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia over the past few days to arrange advanced medical care for him. The decision to send Hadi to Singapore was taken following consultations with specialist doctors at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka and discussions with his family.
Earlier, members of the Inqilab Moncho platform said they and Hadi’s family had arranged the air ambulance through loans, but later the CAO said the state would bear all costs related to his treatment and would closely monitor the process. Finance Advisor Salehuddin Ahmed also reiterated on Monday that the government would bear the costs for his overseas treatment.

Following further consultations involving Cultural Affairs Advisor Mustafa Sarwar Farooki, the Chief Advisor’s Special Assistant for the Health Ministry Md Sayedur Rahman, Evercare Hospital physician Dr Zafar Iqbal, and Hadi’s brother Omar bin Hadi, his transfer to Singapore was finalised.
Hadi rose to prominence during last year’s July Uprising that toppled the Sheikh Hasina regime and the subsequent movement to the ban the Awami League and had announced plans to contest the Dhaka-8 seat as an independent candidate in the upcoming election.
He was shot on Dec 12 while conducting campaign activities in the Bijoynagar area. Police say an assailant riding pillion on a motorcycle opened fire at him while he was travelling on a battery-powered rickshaw, hitting him in the head.
He was first taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors carried out emergency surgery, before being transferred to Evercare Hospital later that night.
The medical board formed to treat Hadi said on Sunday afternoon that a CT scan showed increased swelling of the brain, indicating a "very worrying clinical situation."
“The patient’s blood pressure is fluctuating due to the brain stem injury and pressure due to excessive swelling of the brain. Today, the patient’s heart rate was observed to be slightly higher than normal. Necessary medical support is ongoing to maintain blood pressure and heart stability.”
Describing Hadi’s overall condition as “extremely critical”, the medical board said that if the patient’s family or through the family, the government decides to transfer the patient outside the country for better treatment, the hospital authorities and the medical board are ready to provide their “full cooperation”.
