There are currently 468,220 vacant posts in all ministries and government offices across the country, which will be filled through six-month, one-year and five-year action plans, says State Minister for Public Administration Abdul Bari.

Responding to a question from ruling party MP Sarwar Jamal Nizam in the parliament on Thursday, Bari said the vacancies are mentioned in the latest updates as of Dec 31, 2023.

Of the vacancies, 68,884 are in the first-class category, covering grades one to nine. There are 129,166 vacancies in second-class jobs ranging from grades 10 to 12.

In addition, there are 146,799 vacancies in grades 13 to 16; 115,235 in grades 17 to 20, and 8,136 in other posts.

Bari said his ministry will hire 2,879 employees in six months, another 4,459 in a year and 3,110 more in five years.

Bari, also the lawmaker for Joypurhat-2, said the ministry sent a letter seeking the latest information onn recruitment and vacancies in other ministries and departments to appoint a 500,000-strong workforce “fairly and quickly."

On a query from opposition MP Nurul Islam, he said the government will prioritise merit, honesty, creativity, skills, experience and training, and qualifications for recruitment, transfer and promotion in civil and military administration.

"We will also ensure that no one is deprived. This will also prevent the wastage of government money."

Answering a question from treasury bench MP Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas, Bari said in the last 16 years of the Awami League government, 12 officials of the BCS administration cadre were sent on compulsory retirement, 39 were dismissed from service and 564 were made officers on special duty.

"Law enforcing agencies and the ACC are investigating the irregularities in the BCS recruitment during the Awami League regime,” he said, vowing action against those responsible.

He pledged to introduce a competency-based evaluation system for written and verbal tests instead of the conventional syllabus in BCS and other government job recruitment.

The state minister said the process of conducting a BCS exam within a year is under way.
