The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has detained nine Bangladeshi nationals for allegedly attempting to cross into India illegally through the border in Sherpur's Sreebordi Upazila.

A BGB patrol from the Karnajhora Border Outpost detained them on Thursday afternoon.

They were later handed over to Sreebordi Police Station around 9pm, Sreebardi Police chief Md Nurul Alam said.

The detainees are Apon Jol Das, 30, Nayan Tara, 25, Bijoy Hari Jol Das, 46, Sulakkhi, 42, Bina Das, 31, and four children who were travelling with them.

Police, citing the BGB, said the group had agreed to pay Tk 40,000 to members of a local human trafficking network to facilitate their entry into India.

They travelled from Dhaka to Sreebordi on Wednesday night.

They later took shelter in a forested area of Hariakona, about 150 yards inside Bangladesh, near International Border Pillar 1095.

However, they were unable to cross the border that night due to heightened BGB surveillance.

The group had planned to cross into India on Thursday night, but a BGB patrol detained them beforehand, acting on a tip-off.

Officer Nurul said the incident was under investigation and preparations were under way to file a case under the Prevention and Suppression of Human Trafficking Act and the Passport Act.

He added that efforts were continuing to identify and arrest members of the human trafficking network involved.
