The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) says it has foiled eight attempts by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) to push individuals into Bangladesh in different frontier points over the past 24 hours.
In a statement on Saturday, the BGB said no individual or group will be allowed to enter Bangladesh “illegally” through the border.
It added, “The BGB remains firmly committed to protecting the country’s sovereignty and border security and is fully prepared to respond to any situation.”
According to the statement, the attempted push-ins were prevented across several operational zones:
● In Jhenaidah’s Jadabpur border, BGB patrols stopped three individuals at the Jadavpur border by taking position along the zero line, after which they retreated back into Indian territory.
● In Naogaon’s Karmudanga border region, a group of 17 people was prevented from being pushed in.
● Under the Teesta Battalion, 11 individuals were blocked at the Barkhata border, while another 10 were stopped at the Poyshottobari border.
● In Lalmonirhat Battalion’s Dighaltari border, seven individuals were stopped, and four more were prevented at the Durgapur border. The group was reportedly positioned in a non-fenced sandbar area on the Indian side.
● In Nilphamari Battalion’s Panchagarh Borobari Pradhanpara border, entry of 10 individuals was blocked. A flag meeting between the BGB and BSF company commanders was later held over the incident.
● In Netrokona Battalion’s Kochugora border, 16–17 individuals were reportedly gathered for push-in attempts. The BGB’s stance led to their relocation near the BSF’s Chikni camp close to Lengahura border.
Earlier on Thursday, the BGB had said it had also foiled 10 similar push-in attempts, adding that it was maintaining heightened vigilance and closely monitoring border developments.
After the BJP came to power in West Bengal at the beginning of May, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced the implementation of the “controversial” Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
He said anyone suspected of being a Bangladeshi “infiltrator” would be handed directly over to the BSF.
The state government also established “detention camps” in every district to hold alleged “illegal immigrants” before deportation.
The decision reportedly created widespread anxiety across West Bengal. Indian media reported that many people were voluntarily leaving the state and gathering near border points adjacent to Bangladesh.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam recently said that efforts by the BGB to prevent people being pushed into Bangladesh from India under the label of “infiltrators” would continue.
