Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said any move to ban the Awami League should go through the courts, not executive order.
Speaking at a July Uprising event at Dhaka University on Wednesday, he said the “fascist mafia” organisation's fate would be decided through legal and judicial processes.
"We do not believe it is right to ban the politics of any political party through an executive order," he said.
Citing Article 47 of the Constitution, Salahuddin said both individuals and organisations could be prosecuted for genocide and crimes against humanity.
The discussion, titled “Turning Point of the Mass Uprising”, was organised by Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal.
Former prime minister Sheikh Hasina has been in India since her ouster on Aug 5, 2024, and has been sentenced to death for crimes against humanity.
The minister also referred to Hasina's recent Reuters interview, saying Interpol had issued a Red Notice and Bangladesh had sought her extradition from India.
"She will be arrested the moment she sets foot in Bangladesh. There is no scope for surrender," he said.
