Five platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have been deployed in Gopalganj as part of heightened security ahead of the first anniversary of the deadly clashes surrounding the National Citizen Party's (NCP) march that left five people dead.
District Superintendent of Police Md Habibullah said on Wednesday that the deployment was intended to strengthen security before Jul 16.
"From Wednesday morning, BGB personnel began patrolling key areas of the town. They are conducting joint patrols with police and the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)," he told journalists.
Police have also set up checkpoints at important locations across the town, while plainclothes officers have been deployed as part of the security arrangements.
On Jul 16, 2025, five people were killed in a series of clashes in Gopalganj involving members of the then newly formed NCP's march, law-enforcing agencies and activists of the Awami League, whose activities have been banned.
Police said the enhanced security measures had been taken to prevent any untoward incidents and ensure that law and order remained stable on the anniversary.
The superintendent of police said the authorities were not treating Gopalganj differently from any other district.
"The people of Gopalganj are peace-loving, and the overall law and order remains normal before 16th of July," he said.
Police also said 19 people had been arrested in connection with processions held in the district.
According to police, 15 people were arrested in Kashiani Upazila and four others in Gopalganj Sadar.
All 19 were produced before a court on Wednesday and sent to jail, police said.
