The interim government has sought an explanation as to why rickshaw-puller Azizur Rahman, who went to Dhanmondi 32 to pay respects on the anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s assassination, was arrested in an attempted murder case.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Chief Advisor's Office said it had asked the chief of Dhanmondi Police Station to explain the arrest.
It also noted that Dhaka Metropolitan Police are reviewing whether the officer’s recent actions and statements show any inconsistencies.
The statement added that under the recently amended Section 173(A) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, authorities have directed a swift submission of the investigation report concerning Azizur’s alleged involvement in the case.
On Friday, the 50th anniversary of Bangabandhu’s death, several visitors were reportedly assaulted near his Dhanmondi Road No. 32 residence.
Azizur, arriving around 11am from Jatrabari with a flower bouquet inscribed “15th August National Mourning Day,” was immediately confronted, allegedly by BNP activists. His flowers were snatched, his rickshaw damaged, and he was left in tears.
Azizur said he had bought the bouquet for Tk 400 after working two years in Dhaka as a rickshaw driver, coming solely to pay respects to the Bangabandhu.
Following the incident, police detained him in connection with an attempted murder case filed on Aug 4, 2024, during the July Uprising, involving the shooting of Md Ariful Islam in the Science Lab.
Dhanmondi Police Station's Sub-inspector Mohammad Towhidur Rahman requested that Azizur be remanded.
On Saturday, his lawyer Farzana Yeasmin Rakhi applied for bail.
After hearing, the court ordered his release on bail. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate MA Azharul Islam approved the bail.
