At least 15 people, including a child, have been injured in a stampede at a memorial prayer gathering in Narsingdi Sadar Upazila.

The incident occurred at the Bhagirathpur neighbourhood of Madhabdi Municipality following Friday prayers.

Madhabdi Police chief Md Kamal Hossain confirmed the matter, noting that the crush took place as crowds surged into the venue.

Among those identified are Abdul Mannan, 60, Afaj Uddin, 55, Kadir Mia, 30, Suman Ahmed, 25,Md Zakaria, 15, and 5-year-old Ibrahim.

The identities of the remaining victims are yet to be confirmed.

Residents said the event was organised as a post-funeral prayer gathering for Lal Mia Molla, father of industrialist Abdul Momen Molla, a former president of the Narsingdi Chamber of Commerce.

The programme was held at the field of Hazi Lal Mia Molla High School in Bhagirathpur.

Around 8,000 to 10,000 people from nearby areas gathered outside the school gate.

After Jummah prayers, the gate was opened, triggering a rush as people tried to enter the ground, leading to pushing and trampling that left several people injured.

Locals later rescued the victims and took them to hospital.

Farida Gulshan Ara Kabir, a resident medical officer at Narsingdi Sadar Hospital, said four of the injured were admitted to the facility.

She added that one individual in critical condition was transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced care, while others received first aid.

Upazila administrator (UNO) Asma Jahan Sharker said prior permission had not been taken to hold the event at the school ground and she was not aware of the incident.

Officer Kamal said police went to the spot after receiving information and brought the situation under control.

He added that legal action would be taken if any complaint is filed.
