Bangladesh Police have filed a case against Md Sumon, a constable from Brahmanbaria, who pretended to be a freedom fighter’s grandson to secure his job.
Sumon’s deception came to light 12 years after his initial application. Recently, a fraud case was filed against him at Brahmanbaria Model Police Station. He had been in hiding even before the case was filed.
He was arrested from Akhaura Land Port when he returned to Bangladesh from India through the Akhaura immigration checkpoint on Friday afternoon.
Md Mozaffar Hossain, chief of Brahmanbaria Sadar Police Station, confirmed his arrest.
OC Mozaffar said, “Sumon returned from India to Bangladesh on Friday. He was arrested from the Akhaura International Immigration Police Checkpost based on a tip-off. After his arrest, he was sent to the district jail on Saturday afternoon by the court’s orders.”
According to the case documents, Sumon is a resident of Mogra village in Akhaura Upazila. In 2012, he took part in the Bangladesh Police Trainee Recruit Constable examination. Presenting himself as the grandson of a Liberation War veteran, he turned in the certificate of his neighbour, freedom fighter Md Hossain Mia, as evidence. Hossain Mia, however, is not his grandfather. His actual grandfather’s name is Altaf Ali Hossain.
On Oct 21, 2024, a local man named Md Farhad Mia filed a written complaint with the Brahmanbaria Superintendent of Police’s Office about Sumon’s deception. After the written complaint, Md Delwar Hossain, the then-assistant SP of Kasba Circle, was given the responsibility to investigate this matter. The report stated that the allegations were confirmed based on the testimony of the assistant SP.
The report said that Md Sumon was appointed as a trainee recruit constable on Jul 3, 2012. After police verification and completing six months of basic training, he joined the police force as a constable on Mar 29, 2013.
The case alleges Sumon deliberately submitted someone else’s freedom fighter certificate to push his application for the post. As a constable, he also received salary and rations, along with other benefits from the government.
While the investigation into the complaint was ongoing, Sumon - last working at Burichang Police Station in the Cumilla district - voluntarily resigned from his job on Dec 1 citing personal and family reasons. Then, on Dec 21, a case was filed against him at Brahmanbaria Sadar Model Police Station.
