A fault in the transmission line of the Shitalakkhya 132kV Grid Substation has left large parts of Narayanganj city and surrounding areas without electricity, disrupting daily life and causing widespread suffering amid intense heat.
The outage began on Sunday morning without any prior notice.
Kamal Hossain, chief engineer of Dhaka Power Distribution Company (DPDC) Narayanganj South, said: “A fault developed in a line at the Shitalakkhya 132kV Grid Substation, forcing the suspension of power distribution in the areas supplied from the facility.”
DPDC said the Power Grid Company of Bangladesh (PGCB) was carrying out repair work on the affected line, but it remained uncertain when normal electricity supply would be restored.
Residents said areas including Chashara, Ukilpara, Golatipa, Kalirbazar, Amlapara, Tanbazar and Kashipur had been without power since the morning.
Tanbazar businessman Sijan Ahmed said, “I went to the market at 10am and found there was no electricity. The heat was unbearable. I eventually closed my shop and returned home at 1pm, only to discover there was no power there either.”
Kashipur resident Rehana Parveen said, “We do not have a gas connection at home and depend on an electric stove for cooking. With no electricity since morning, we had to buy our meals.”
Another resident Kulsum Begum said there had been no announcement warning of a lengthy outage.
“We heard no public announcement that power restoration would be delayed. Thinking it was routine loadshedding, we did not store water. If the outage continues, we may also face a water shortage.”
However, Jasim Uddin, assistant general manager of the BSCIC district office, said electricity supply to the Narayanganj industrial area remained unaffected.
DPDC Chief Engineer Kamal said some areas were receiving electricity through alternative lines, but loadshedding could persist for the next two days.
