An executive magistrate of the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has fined a construction site in Banani Tk 50,000 after Aedes mosquito larvae were found during a dengue prevention drive.
Executive Magistrate Marufa Akter Nelly imposed the fine on Friday as part of a campaign to inspect homes and destroy mosquito breeding sites across the capital.
Speaking during the drive, State Minister for Local Government Mir Shahe Alam said the government's objective was not to impose fines or jail offenders, but to build a dengue-free city.
"If city residents remain aware and keep their homes, yards and rooftop flower pots free of stagnant water, it is possible to prevent dengue," he said.
He urged residents to regularly remove stagnant water from rooftops, courtyards and other areas, warning that water should not be allowed to accumulate in flower pots, coconut shells, paint cans or any other containers.
He said public awareness was the key to eliminating dengue.
The minister also encouraged residents to collect mosquito larvicide tablets from DNCC regional offices and use them to treat stagnant water around their homes to help destroy mosquito larvae.
