A leader of the Jatiotabadi Swecchasebak Dal, the volunteer wing of the BNP, has been hospitalised after allegedly being beaten inside Rangpur’s Kotwali Police Station.
The allegations triggered an internal investigation and the withdrawal of the police station chief (OC) and four other personnel, according to officers
Kotwali Police chief Azad Rahman denied the allegations while Rangpur Metropolitan Police formed a committee to investigate the incident.
District Swecchasebak Dal Member Secretary Zakaria Hossain said Rakibul Islam, member secretary of the organisation’s Sadar Upazila unit, was allegedly assaulted inside the police station around 9:30pm on Wednesday.
He was later admitted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital.
Rakibul alleged that he was beaten by policemen led by officer Azad after he had gone to the station to assist in resolving a dispute involving a missing young couple.
According to police, a couple had gone missing from Rangpur city ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, prompting their families to file a general diary.
The couple were later traced and brought to the police station on Wednesday evening.
Rakibul said he, along with other Swecchasebak Dal leaders, went to the station at the request of the families to help mediate the situation.
He alleged that while he attempted to contact a senior leader regarding claims that police had beaten the couple, he was attacked by the officer and others.
He claimed he suffered injuries to his head and eyes and was bleeding, adding that police later cleaned the blood from his body and confiscated two mobile phones.
Officer Azad said a confrontation had broken out between the two families and police had intervened to restore order, denying allegations of assault on Rakibul.
On the injury marks, he suggested the activist may have been hurt amid the chaos outside the station.
Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mohammad Abdul Mabud said strict action would be taken if the allegations were proven in the investigation conducted by a three-member committee.
Zakaria warned of tougher agitation if those responsible were not punished, including the possibility of besieging the police station.
