An Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) candidate has died after reportedly jumping from the roof of a six-storey building in Mymensingh city hours before the start of her examinations.
The incident took place around 6am on Thursday at a building known as NASA Tower near Kachijhuli Mosque Road, Mymensingh Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Operations) Ashraful Karim said.
The victim, 18-year-old Tisha Sarkar, was the daughter of Uttam Sarkar and Moni Sarkar from Tarakanda Madhya Bazar, and was due to sit the 2026 HSC exams from Alamgir Monsur Memorial College, Mymensingh.
According to police and local residents, Tisha had been living in a female students' hostel in the building for the past two years while pursuing her studies.
The exams were scheduled to begin across Bangladesh at 10am on Thursday. Police said the incident occurred about four hours before the examination.
She was taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital in a critical condition, where the attending doctor declared her dead.
Since the other residents of the hostel were asleep during the early morning incident, they could not provide immediate details about what transpired at that exact moment.
On receiving information, Kotwali Model Police Station personnel recovered the body and sent it to the hospital morgue for a postmortem examination.
ASP Ashraful said, “Preliminarily, it is believed the girl died by suicide after jumping from the roof of the six-storey building.”
He said investigators were examining whether exam-related mental pressure or any other reason had contributed to the incident.
Legal proceedings are under way, he added.
