Dinesh Trivedi has been appointed as the next high commissioner of India to Bangladesh.
The diplomat is expected to take up his new assignment in Dhaka shortly, according to a media statement issued on Monday by the Indian Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi.
Trivedi will succeed Pranay Verma at a time when relations between the two neighbours are focused on regional stability, connectivity, and water-sharing agreements.
The appointment marks a notable shift from India's long-standing tradition of posting career diplomats to Dhaka, opting instead for a politician and former union minister to lead the mission.
Trivedi is a former MP from Barrackpore and a senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader.
The appointment of a politician to a key diplomatic post is seen as a strategic move by the Narendra Modi government to reset ties with Bangladesh.
Bilateral relations faced significant strain following the ousting of Sheikh Hasina in August 2024 and the subsequent tenure of the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus.
Relations began showing signs of normalisation after the BNP assumed power following the general election in February 2026.
New Delhi reportedly believes that Trivedi’s extensive political experience will be instrumental in bridging the diplomatic distance between the two neighbours.
The 75-year-old Trivedi brings a unique cultural advantage to the role.
He is fluent in Bengali and is an accomplished sitar player.
Having been deeply involved in West Bengal politics for decades, he possesses an intimate understanding of the shared culture of the two Bengals.
Born to a Gujarati couple, Trivedi graduated from St Xavier's College in Kolkata before earning an MBA from the University of Texas.
Trivedi’s political journey began in the 1980s with the Congress party before he moved to the Janata Dal in 1990.
He later became a founding member and the first general secretary of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in 1998.
During his time with the TMC, Trivedi held several high-profile roles, including serving as the union minister for health and family welfare under the Manmohan Singh administration.
In 2011, he took over the railways ministry, succeeding Mamata Banerjee in the federal cabinet.
Throughout his extensive political career, he also represented his constituents across multiple terms in both the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha.
Trivedi resigned from the TMC in February 2021 citing internal differences and joined the BJP in March of the same year.
