Law Advisor Asif Nazrul has pledged the government’s highest priority and swiftest legal action in the case over a woman’s ‘rape’ and the viral circulation of her video from Muradnagar in Cumilla.
He drew parallels with the rape case in Magura that led to an expedited trial.
Speaking at a press briefing following Sunday’s meeting of the Advisory Council, Nazrul said the incident was deeply “shocking and outrageous”.
“The home ministry took immediate steps, and all those responsible for sharing the images have been arrested.”
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to justice, saying: “We have reformed rape laws. You saw the swift trial in the Magura case. This incident will also be dealt with with the utmost seriousness and urgency.”
The case, which has provoked strong criticism on social media platforms, centres on a video that shows a woman from Ramchandrapur Dakshin Union in Muradnagar being filmed undressed and then publicly humiliated.
The footage was subsequently circulated online. The woman later filed a case accusing a man named Fazor Ali of raping her.
According to the case statement, the woman had been visiting her father’s home in the area. On Thursday night, after her parents stepped out around 11pm, Fazor allegedly entered the house and sexually assaulted her.
As per a district police statement, Fazor was physically beaten after the alleged rape but managed to flee. Some individuals then filmed the victim at the scene and shared the footage online.
Police say five people, including Fazor, have been arrested in connection with the case.
The woman, a member of the Hindu community, said her family had come to know Fazor through previous financial dealings. Using this familiarity, he allegedly entered their home and committed the act.
Nazrul condemned not only the crime but also the public exposure of the victim through social media.
“Those who irresponsibly shared the video have committed a grave offence. Every one of them has been arrested.”
