The suspected supplier of the firearm used to assassinate Inqilab Moncho leader Sharif Osman bin Hadi has provided a confessional statement before a Dhaka court.
Following the completion of a three-day interrogation, the investigating officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police Abdul Quadir Bhuiyan of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), produced the supplier, Majedul Haque, alias Helal, in court on Saturday.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam recorded the statement under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
Afterwards, the suspect was sent to jail, confirmed Prosecution Police Sub-Inspector Roknuzzaman.
Helal, a Chattogram-based arms shop owner, was apprehended by the Detective Branch (DB) of police on Apr 14 in Hares Shah Mazar Lane in Chawkbazar.
He had been placed on a three-day remand the following day.
The victim, Hadi, gained prominence during the July Uprising and subsequent movements calling for the ban of the Awami League.
He had announced his candidacy as an independent for the Dhaka-8 constituency in the parliamentary elections held in February.
Hadi was shot in the head by an assassin on Dec 12 while campaigning at Bijoynagar, just a day after the election schedule was announced.
He was initially rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and later moved to a private hospital in Dhaka.
On Dec 14, he was airlifted to Singapore for advanced treatment, where he succumbed to his injuries on Dec 18.
Inqilab Moncho Member Secretary Abdullah Al Jaber filed a case for attempted murder immediately after the shooting.
Later, the case was upgraded to a murder charge following Hadi’s death.
Detectives initially investigated the case and submitted a chargesheet on Jan 6, naming 17 individuals, including former ward councillor Taijul Islam Chowdhury Bappi and former Bangladesh Chhatra League activist Faisal Karim Masud.
The complainant filed a ‘no-confidence’ petition against the DB's findings on Jan 15.
The court subsequently accepted the petition and transferred the case to the CID for further investigation.
