NCP leader Hasnat Abdullah has been confronted by local Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal and Jubo Dal activists following a meeting with former Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) mayor M Manjur Alam.
The incident occurred in Kattali after Hasnat visited the former mayor’s residence at his invitation on Tuesday.
Riduan Hridoy, coordinator of the NCP’s Chattogram media cell, described the visit as a "courtesy call" during Hasnat’s personal trip to the port city.
Hasnat reportedly stayed at the house for several hours before leaving around 6pm.
Shahed Akbar, former vice-president of Chattogram City Jubo Dal, told bdnews24.com that activists gathered at the site because the house is associated with former Awami League lawmaker Didarul Alam.
He alleged that Manjur has long patronised the Awami League.
"I asked him -- you are a warrior of the July movement, so why have you come to the house of an associate [of the fallen regime]?" Shahed said.
He added, however, no disrespect was shown to the member of parliament (MP) and that party activists eventually escorted him to his vehicle.
Once an Awami League-backed ward councillor and a close aide to the late ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury, Manjur served as acting mayor when Mohiuddin was arrested during the 2007-08 caretaker government.
In 2010, he ran for mayor with BNP’s backing, defeating his former mentor Mohiuddin by nearly 100,000 votes.
He later served as an advisor to former BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia.
During the 2015 city polls, he boycotted the mayor election within three hours, alleging "massive rigging", and announced his retirement from politics.
Despite his retirement claim, he expressed interest in returning to the Awami League in 2016.
His nephew Didarul Alam subsequently served two terms as an Awami League MP for Sitakunda.
Speculation regarding Manjur’s return to active politics intensified last March when water bottles featuring his image were distributed at an NCP Iftar event.
Political observers suggest he may be eyeing a mayoral run in the next city corporation election under the NCP banner.
Manjur could not be reached for comment.
