Gunmen have been assigned to 20 people, including the editors of Prothom Alo and The Daily Star, following the attacks on the offices of the newspapers, according to Home Advisor Jahangir Alam Chowdhury.
“The DMP has arrested 17 people in connection with the attacks on the offices of Prothom Alo and Daily Star,” Jahangir told reporters on Monday.
“Gunmen have been given for the safety of the editors of the two newspapers and security has been increased at their homes.”
He made the remarks after a meeting of the Advisory Council Committee on law and order.
Hadi, convener of Inqilab Moncho, died last Thursday while undergoing treatment in Singapore after being shot by an assailant.
Following news of his death, several establishments, including Prothom Alo, Daily Star and Chhayanaut, were attacked and set on fire amid protests and unrest.
Jahangir said the government was giving “utmost importance” to the trial of those involved in Hadi’s killing.
“The government is determined to ensure justice in the murder of Sharif Osman Hadi, a frontline fighter of the July Uprising,” he said.
Asked whether Faisal Karim Masud, a key suspect in the killing, was in the country or abroad, Jahangir said the “main mastermind” of the murder would be identified and brought to justice soon.
“The main mastermind of this incident, Faisal, will be tracked down and brought to justice very soon,” he said, adding that details could not be disclosed at this stage in the interest of the investigation.
“If I knew where Hadi’s killer was, I would have caught him,” Jahangir said.
“He could be in the country or outside. But he did not go through legal channels. I cannot say whether he went through illegal channels or not.”
Responding to questions about rumours of a “hit list” of 50 people circulating after Hadi’s assassination, the home advisor said intelligence agencies had already identified those at risk.
“Those who are at risk have already been given a gunman each,” he said.
“[Intelligence agencies] DGFI, NSI and SB have sat together and prepared a list. Many have been given gunmen, while many did not want them.”
When asked whether those provided with security were politicians, Jahangir avoided a direct reply, saying: “When the gunman will go around with them, do investigative journalism and find out.”
Meanwhile, several organisations, including DUCSU and Inqilab Moncho, have demanded Jahangir’s resignation, alleging failure to arrest those responsible for Hadi’s killing.
Addressing rumours that he had resigned on Sunday, Jahangir dismissed them.
“If I had resigned, I would not be sitting here,” he said.
