A video showing a mugger brandishing a machete and committing robbery in broad daylight at the Dhanmondi 32 traffic signal in Dhaka has gone viral on the internet.
The footage, which surfaced on the social media platform on Friday, prompted police to “launch” a search for the suspect.
In the 13-second clip, apparently filmed from inside a private car nearby, the man is seen intimidating someone with a machete beside a busy road before picking up a bag from the ground and slinging it over his shoulder.
He then walks away across the street, passing directly in front of a traffic police personnel without being stopped.
Also visible in the video are two uniformed policemen and another individual in plain clothes, who appears to be directing traffic.
It is believed that the plainclothes individual is also a police official.
As the mugger walks past the three police personnel, he conceals the machete with the bag in his other hand and quickly makes his escape.

No one in the vicinity is seen intervening, and the young man in trousers and a shirt disappears within moments, taking advantage of the passivity of bystanders.
Dhanmondi Police Station chief Kyashainu said the authorities were unaware of the incident until the video spread online.
“It happened at the Russell Square signal around 12am last night,” he told bdnews24.com. “No one has filed a complaint so far, no one came to the station or informed us.”
“After watching the video, we’ve sent a team to the scene. We’re working to identify the man by collecting CCTV footage from the area,” he added.
