Police have arrested Imran Chowdhury Akash, a suspect in a case over the murder of Abu Sayed during the Anti-discrimination Student Movement, in Jamalpur’s Islampur Upazila as part of the ongoing Operation Devil Hunt.

He was taken into custody from his residence at the Upazila’s Gangapara village on Saturday night, said Islampur Police Station chief Saifullah Saif.

Imran, who is the son of Shahen Shah Chowdhury, is the joint general secretary of Rangpur’s Begum Rokeya University unit of the Chhatra League. He is also the president of Sheikh Russel Shishu Kishor Krira Chakra.

“Imran was in hiding since Aug 5. He was spreading misinformation on social media to put the [interim] government in a tight spot,” Saifullah said.

“Police arrested him under the Operation Devil Hunt. He is accused in multiple cases.”

Imran will be produced before a court after legal steps are taken against him, Saifullah added.
