Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has spent a busy day in Beijing, holding a series of meetings with senior Chinese business leaders ahead of high-level talks with Chinese Premier Li Qiang.
Executives from several major Chinese industrial groups met the prime minister at the Diaoyutai State Guest House on Thursday.
In a press conference there in the afternoon, Prime Minister's Office spokesman Mahdi Amin said: "Today, top officials of major Chinese industrial groups saw Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in a series of meetings."
''In addition, the heads of important institutions - including China International Development Cooperation Agency, China Railway Construction Corporation, China Road and Bridge Corporation, investors, ministers and prominent figures - met with [him] and discussed in detail how to play a more effective role in investment and trade expansion in the development and progress of Bangladesh."
According to Mahadi, Tarique is scheduled to meet Chinese Premier Li at 5pm local time (3pm Bangladesh time) at the Great Hall of the People.
‘‘After that, 15 memoranda of understanding (MoUs) on various issues will be signed between Bangladesh and China in the presence of the prime ministers of the two countries, which I hope will be influential in further strengthening China-Bangladesh relations.
“Later, the prime minister of China will host a state banquet in honour of the honourable prime minister of Bangladesh and his entourage.”
The PMO spokesman said, “Under the leadership of the prime minister, we are determined to build relations with China by keeping in mind the ‘Bangladesh First’ policy. We want to protect the interests of the country and build relations with equality and fairness as the foundation.”
He said the visit aims to deepen cooperation across a wide range of sectors.
“From strategic cooperation to trade, investment and employment, and from development projects to people-to-people relations, we believe that the bilateral engagement of the two countries will reach new heights in all areas.”
