BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said the people are “waiting” for the party’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman to return to Bangladesh before the national elections.
Speaking at a rally of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal in Shahbagh on Sunday, he said: “The fight before us now is to establish a democratic state. We are moving forward towards that goal.
“Our leader, Tarique Rahman, after discussion with Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus in London, has decided that the elections will be held in February.
“The people of Bangladesh are waiting for our leader Tarique Rahman’s comeback to the country before that.”
While he was delivering his speech, Tarique, who has been living in the UK with his family since 2008, joined the rally from London via video link.
Fakhrul said, “Let us all unite and, under the leadership of Tarique Rahman, make this a country that was truly the dream of martyred president Ziaur Rahman, the dream of our national leader Begum Khaleda Zia… let us build a truly happy, beautiful, prosperous, and democratic Bangladesh.”
‘WE WILL NOT BOW OUR HEADS TO ANYONE’
Fakhrul said, “Today, many efforts are being made to create division in Bangladesh. The ‘fascist’ figure has taken refuge in India, and from there, she is threatening to attack Bangladesh with her followers. They are also trying to spread chaos in different ways.
“We must take an oath today that we will never give Hasina any opportunity to do politics in this country again. We will never bow our heads to anyone and build the country ourselves.”
To the Chhatra Dal activists, he said: “The responsibility of taking the country forward is yours. We have to move forward by practising our talent and intelligence.”
The BNP secretary general also commented that the July-August mass uprising created an opportunity to build a new nation.
The Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal rally began at Shahbagh on the occasion of the anniversary of the mass uprising at 3pm on Saturday.
