The Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi has confirmed the identity of the Bangladeshi national killed along with 21 others in a devastating fire at a hotel in the Indian capital.
“Md Nurul Amin, 44, is among the 22 nationals from seven countries who tragically lost their lives in the incident,” the mission said in a Facebook post late on Thursday night.
They were staying in the hotel in South Delhi's Malviya Nagar to receive treatment at the nearby Max Hospital, it said.
The dead include at least 12 foreigners.
The High Commission said it was working to ensure the speedy repatriation of Amin’s remains.
Earlier in the day, the mission said at least eight Bangladeshis were injured in the fire that broke out on Wednesday morning.
Three of them are in critical condition, it said referring to doctors.
Bangladeshi diplomats stationed there are in contact with the survivors and their families. The survivors are receiving treatment at various hospitals in New Delhi.
The head of the mission visited all Bangladesh nationals under treatment at Max Hospital and inquired about their condition, assuring them of necessary support.
The fire broke out a little before 9am (local time), and eight fire tenders were dispatched to douse the blaze, police said in a statement.
The fire was extinguished around midday, a Reuters witness said.
"Through the coordinated efforts of police, fire services, and other emergency responders, more than 40 persons have been rescued and shifted to nearby hospitals for medical treatment," police said.
Preliminary findings suggest the fire may have been triggered by a short circuit in the basement before spreading rapidly through the building, the NDTV report read.
Investigators are examining alleged violations of fire safety rules, including the absence of a fire NOC, a single entry and exit point, sealed windows, and excess occupancy.
