Government employees have started their last working day before the seven-day break for Eid-ul-Azha.
While some workers have taken two extra days off to coordinate their trips to their ancestral homes with the closure of schools and colleges, the Secretariat – the nerve centre of the administration – was still active with its day-to-day activities.
However, a festive atmosphere is in the air among the public sector officials and employees.
A senior official of the finance division said, "There is not much of a workload today. Only those involved in meetings at the offices of ministers and secretaries are a bit busy.
"The finance minister had a meeting; it was a courtesy call with the Ministry of Land."
Most other officials seemed to be doing their routine work.
The public holiday for the upcoming Eid starts on Monday.
However, the notice announcing the weeklong holiday had announced that all government offices, courts and all bank branches would be open on the Saturday and Sunday before the break. Accordingly, government employees also worked on Saturday, which typically counts as a weekend holiday.
According to the government's decision, all public, semi-public, autonomous, semi-autonomous and private offices in the country will be closed from May 25 to May 31 for Eid.
However, emergency services such as electricity, water, gas and other fuel, the Fire Service, port activities, cleaning activities, telephone and internet, postal services and vehicles and employees engaged in these related services will remain open.
Hospitals and emergency services and employees related to these services will not be on holiday either, the notice also said.
Doctors and employees engaged in medical services and vehicles and workers carrying medical equipment, including medicines, will be exempt as well. It also applies to offices involved in emergency work.
Bangladesh will celebrate Eid-ul-Azha on May 28.
