The National Board of Revenue says that the WhatsApp social media account of Chairman Md Abdur Rahman Khan “has been hacked”.

The tax collection agency’s Public Relations Office made the announcement on Wednesday.

Confirming the breach, NBR spokesman Md Al Amin Sheikh urged the public “to avoid confusion on the matter”.

When contacted on his mobile phone to discuss the issue, the NBR chairman disconnected the call.

In August last year, following the ousting of the former government, Khan, then secretary of the Financial Institutions Department, was appointed as the chief of the NBR and was also made secretary of the Internal Resources Division.

Khan is a member of the tax cadre from the 13th batch of the Bangladesh Civil Service. Since joining the cadre service on Apr 25, 1994, he has worked at various levels of the tax administration.

He also served as joint commissioner, director of the BCS Tax Academy and first secretary of the NBR during his time in the cadre.

He also served as deputy secretary of the IRD, and joint secretary and additional secretary of the finance department.

Khan also has an extensive career as a professional accountant.

Several messages have recently been received from the NBR chief’s WhatsApp account requesting money. Several of these messages went to journalists.

One journalist received a message that read, “I need Tk 35,000 in my bKash account. Can you send it to me? I will return it to you tomorrow.”

Another journalist was sent a similar request for Tk 30,000.
