An employee of Islamic University (IU) has allegedly stabbed the chairperson of the social welfare department to death in her office before attempting to take his own life, in an incident authorities believe was triggered by a grievance over a departmental transfer.

The victim, Assistant Professor Asma Sadia Runa, was attacked on Wednesday afternoon at the Theology and Islamic Studies faculty building.

The suspect, Fazlur Rahman – formerly a staff member of the same department – attempted suicide following the attack and remains in critical condition at Kushtia General Hospital.

IU Proctor Shahinuzzaman said the incident occurred around 4:30pm.

Runa was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital.

University sources and students suggest the motive stems from Fazlur’s recent transfer to the political science department a month ago due to "behavioural issues".

“Fazlu was transferred recently. As the chairperson, [Runa] may have been involved in that decision, and Fazlur likely harboured a grudge. He found her alone in her office today and stabbed her,” a teacher at the hospital told reporters.

Niamatullah Munim, president of the Islamic University Journalists’ Association, said Fazlur was a daily wage-based employee.

“We initially learnt there were disputes regarding his payments and other issues, leading to his transfer. The attack followed an altercation over these matters,” he said.

The suspect’s cousin Md Sajal claimed Fazlur was under immense financial strain.

“Due to complications, Fazlur had not received his salary for nine months. He was struggling to support his family, and being transferred to another department amidst this may have triggered the incident,” he said.

A student described the horrific scene: “There was an Iftar party in the department today after an afternoon exam. We were preparing the room while [Runa] was in her office. Suddenly, a friend heard screams for help. We broke down the door and found [her] collapsed on the floor, while the attacker was cutting his own throat.”

Doctors at the hospital confirmed Runa died from excessive bleeding caused by stab wounds.

Resident Medical Officer (RMO) Hossain Imam said the suspect’s condition is critical. “The injured man’s trachea has been severed, and he has several other wounds. He is currently undergoing treatment in a precarious state.”

Runa resided in the city's Courtpara area with her husband Imtiar Sultan, a part-time teacher at Kushtia Polytechnic Institute.
