A Bangladeshi expatriate has been killed in a missile strike in Saudi Arabia, just hours after he had called his wife to discuss sending money home for their children’s Eid-ul-Fitr clothes.
The victim, 40-year-old Mosharraf Hossain, was a resident of Kirtankhola village in the Sakhipur Upazila of Tangail.
He was a father of two sons, aged 14 and 7.
Mosharraf was killed on Sunday evening, moments before Iftar, when a missile hit a labour camp belonging to the Al-Tuwaiq Baladia Company in Al-Kharj city.
Sakhipur Upazila administrator Abdullah Al Rony confirmed the death to reporters on Monday.
"He went abroad eight years ago to pull his family out of poverty," said Rony, after visiting the bereaved family.
Authorities assured the family of steps needed to repatriate the body.
Mosharraf’s wife Kobori Akter shared that her husband had called on Sunday morning.
"He said he would send money for Eid so I could buy things for our two boys. Who knew those would be his last words?" she said.
News of his death spread through social media during Sahri on Monday, casting a shadow of mourning over his village.
Mosharraf last visited Bangladesh three years ago.
The strike occurred as the workers were preparing for Iftar.
Mosharraf’s cousin M Zakir Hossain, who also works in Saudi Arabia, said the explosion devastated the camp.
"I heard there is a US military base near the area where the missile struck," he added.
International news agencies Reuters and Al Jazeera, citing Saudi Civil Defence posts on X (formerly Twitter), reported that residential buildings in Al-Kharj were hit by "projectiles" as regional hostilities continue to escalate.
The local administration has assured the family of full support and financial assistance.
