A joint force has seized around 340,000 yaba pills in Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar, and detained a Myanmar national suspected of involvement in the smuggling.
The Myanmar national has been identified as a drug trafficker by Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
The operation was carried out by members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and BGB on Thursday morning in a Keora grove near Teknaf’s Sabrang, said Lt Col Ashiqur Rahman, commander of BGB Battalion-2 in Teknaf.
The detainee, Md Omar Siddique, 28, is a resident of Kharangkhali in Myanmar, according to the BGB.
Briefing reporters at his office in the afternoon, Ashiqur said: “Acting on a tip-off, we conducted the raid along with RAB in the Keora grove. When one suspect attempted to flee, he was detained.”
“Later, we recovered 340,000 yaba pills from the site. Legal action is under way against the detainee and over the recovered drugs.”
He added, “We are working jointly to stop drug smuggling along the border. At the same time, the drug godfathers will be identified and brought to justice.”
He called this operation a testament to the relentless efforts of RAB and BGB to secure the border and curb narcotics smuggling under a zero-tolerance policy in the interest of national security.
