A female garments worker has been run over and killed by a truck in the Bagher Bazar area of Gazipur Sadar Upazila, leading her colleagues to block the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway in protest.
The protest by workers at the Golden Refit Garments Limited factory began around 8am on Wednesday. Shortly afterwards, they blocked the highway and brought traffic to a halt, according to Abdul Halim, chief of Joydebpur Police Station.
The deceased, 32-year-old Jannatul Ferdous Tamanna, was a senior operator at the factory’s sewing section.
Tamanna was killed around 5:40am on Wednesday as she was crossing the highway on her way to the factory, the protesting workers say.
The workers are demanding the swift arrest of the truck driver, for him to be brought to justice soon, and for compensation and support for the victim’s family.
At 10:30am, OC Halim said: “Industrial Police personnel are at the scene. They are helping us to try and convince the protesting workers to clear the highway.”
