IGP Mainul Islam directs all police chiefs to strengthen the drive

Police have arrested 1,140 people in charges of attacking the Anti-discrimination Student movement that began in July.
The Police Headquarters in Dhaka said in a statement on Monday that criminals, including the Movement's attackers, are being arrested as part of the ongoing special operation in Bangladesh.
In a message, Inspector General of Police Md Mainul Islam directed all police chiefs to strengthen the drive, the statement read.
It added that the IGP had ordered officers to intensify the current campaign against crimes such as mugging, extortion, drugs, youth gangs, traffic management.
Action is also being taken against the attackers, the accused in crucial murder and other cases tied to the attacks on protesters of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in the nationwide special campaign launched on Oct 18.
Legal actions such as lawsuits and arrests are also being taken against those involved in crimes, including extortion, tender-grabbing, and criminal offences under the umbrella of political parties in the past, according to the statement.
‘As many as 200 muggers, extortionists, and robbers; 16 listed criminals, 1,140 attackers of the Movement, 1,144 people in drug cases, and 55 illegal weapon holders have been arrested as of Oct 27."
