Police have arrested Mamunurrashid Qasemee, chairman of the Shariah-based marriage and counselling institution Ideal Marriage Bureau, on rape charges.
He was arrested on Sunday afternoon at his home in Atibazar, Keraniganj.
Inspector (Investigation) Ilias Hossain of Keraniganj Police told bdnews24.com that he was detained after a woman filed a case earlier in the day.
According to the case statement, Qasemee had married the woman by reciting verses from the Quran in a religious ceremony, lived with her as husband and wife, and later divorced her.
The complaint alleges that Qasemee kept the woman in his custody from Sept 6 to Oct 14 and raped her on the pretext of remarrying her, the inspector said.
Qasemee also serves as the director of an educational institution called Markazush Sharia Al-Islamia Bangladesh.
