Court jails seven for life over 13-year old murder in Sirajganj

Each convict has also been fined Tk 20,000, with an additional two months in prison if they fail to pay

A Sirajganj court has sentenced seven men to life imprisonment in a 13-year-old murder case in Shahjadpur Upazila.

Judge Kaniz Fatema of the Additional District and Sessions Judge’s Court delivered the verdict on Sunday, Additional Public Prosecutor Golam Sarwar Khan said.

Those sentenced are Waz Ali, Abdul Hamid, Arshed Ali, Abdus Samad, Md Kunu, Idris Ali and Selim Reza -- all from Potajia village.

Each convict was also fined Tk 20,000, with an additional two months in prison in case of non-payment.

According to the prosecution, the convicts had a long-running land dispute with Osman Gani of the same village. On Aug 23, 2012, they attacked Osman and his family with local weapons, leaving several injured. Osman’s son Sabbir Hossain later died on the way to Bogura hospital.

Osman filed a case with police after the incident, leading investigators to bring murder charges against 15 people.

Of the remaining suspects, Abdur Rahim was jailed for two years, while Nazmul, Abdul Karim, Farid, Fakhrul, Shafik, Rofiz and Shukur Ali were handed a six-month’ term each.
